MISHA WAKS EXHIBITION AT THE GALLERY

Dedicated to the artistic soul of MARCELL PUSTUL, THE GALLERY at Tamka 49 opens its doors to You Were Born to Rule Men, a new exhibition by Misha Waks, presented from June 20th to July 20th.

The exhibition explores the complex relationship between history, power, and the expectations placed on women across generations. Its title is inspired by the words once addressed to Queen Bona Sforza by her educator — a phrase that carries both the promise of female authority and the contradictions that have historically surrounded it.

Rather than offering a chronological reading of the past, Waks treats history as a living structure: something that continues to shape identity, memory, and the way power is performed today. Through a series of new works, the artist revisits historical narratives and questions how women have been portrayed, remembered, controlled, and mythologised by political, cultural, and domestic frameworks.

Figures of authority appear alongside symbols of obedience, revealing the tension between personal agency and the roles society continues to prescribe. In Waks’ visual language, the past does not remain distant. It becomes intimate, almost physical — a mirror reflecting the freedoms women inherit, fight for, and continue to redefine.

You Were Born to Rule Men is not a historical reconstruction. It is a contemporary reflection on power, femininity, memory, and the stories that decide who is allowed to rule, who is expected to obey, and who chooses to rewrite the narrative.
